I’ve had a season ticket in our family’s name since 1983. This ticket was passed from my granddad to my father to me. Sunday, August 31st, 4:30 pm kickoff. Liverpool vs. Arsenal at Anfield. Already got butterflies thinking about it.
I called my mate Henry yesterday; he supports Arsenal, so I feel for him, and he’s buzzing about this game. “It’s massive,” he says. “Could establish the tone for our entire season.” He’s not wrong. Early-season clash between two sides who were miles apart last season but may be right back in the thick of things this time.
The thing is, this isn’t any old Liverpool vs Arsenal. This might be the one that tells us all we need to know about where both clubs truly stand.
Why This Fixture Matters More
Arsenal finished sixth last season. Sixth! The only thing Henry’s been talking about is how disappointing it was. “We were supposed to be mounting a challenge to Liverpool for the title,” he laments. But they weren’t. Liverpool ran away with it while Arsenal scraped for European places.
But the thing is, it’s a new season. Fresh start. Both sides have been busy in the transfer market. New players, new hopes, same old pressure.
Liverpool is the defending champion, having secured a second Premier League title last season, but they are fourth in the early league standings. Arsenal are sixth once more, though, to be fair, it’s only August. There is plenty of time to climb.
What Happened Last Time
The last time they met was absolutely mind-blowing. Complete madness. Liverpool went up, 2-0, and in control. But Arsenal clawed their way back to 2-2, even with ten men after Merino got sent off. Classic stuff.
Henry was insufferable after that game. “We showed we can match them,” he said again and again. Maybe they did. Or perhaps Liverpool simply took their foot off the gas once they’d clinched the league. Hard to tell.
Either way, it proved these teams can produce proper entertainment when they meet. None of this boring tactical chess match nonsense. Just pure football.
Early Season Pressure
Both managers will be feeling it already. Mikel Arteta did not get too long to savour last season’s disappointment. Arsenal fans expect better. They have spent money, enacted changes, and talked a good game.
Arne Slot’s got different pressure. In his first season, he won the league, and it was a fabulous achievement. But now the fans are expecting Liverpool to do it again. That’s harder than people think.
Early-season games, like this one, can determine the whole mood. Win, and you’re flying. Lose, and all of a sudden, everybody’s asking questions you do not want to answer.
The Ticket Scramble
Liverpool members who have recorded 4+ home fixtures in 2018/19 can now register with ticket sales on a first-come, first-served basis with no guarantees. The lucky Arsenal got 3,052 tickets in sections AL6, AL7, AL8 and AL9. Proper away end that, fair play.
Tickets are like gold dust for this fixture. Always are. Henry has been after one ticket for weeks, and he keeps texting me, asking if I know anyone. I don’t, obviously. Well, I do, but I’m not telling him.
Current Form Check
Both teams have had surprising starts to the season. Liverpool is fourth, and Arsenal is sixth; that’s the Premier League being a bit more fierce this year, and there are no easy games anymore.
But league standings after three games do not hold much meaning. I mean, what about Leicester winning the whole thing? Started slowly that season, too. It is too early to really judge anyone.
Yet you can begin to detect some patterns emerging. Liverpool appears sturdy rather than spectacular. Arsenal appear dangerous in attack but shaky at the back. Classic Arsenal, really.
What Makes This Different
This isn’t like when they met each other last May, when Liverpool had clinched the league already. Both teams need points now. Both have something to prove. Arsenal want to prove they are one of the big boys again. Liverpool would like to show that last season was not a fluke.
The atmosphere will be different as well. Anfield in August when there is everything to pay for; there’s nothing like it. Arsenal’s fans will make a racket, but they will be drowned out. Always are.
Key Battles
Midfield is where this match will be decided. Liverpool’s pressing game against Arsenal’s passing. Whoever blinks first usually loses. They both like to play football the correct way, that is, on the ground, with rapid-fire passing, at a fast pace.
Defence could be crucial too. Neither team’s been keeping many clean sheets lately. It could be one of those 3-2, 4-3 type games that leave everyone knackered.
The Bigger Picture
Win this, and suddenly you’re a title contender again. Lose and you’re playing catch-up already. That’s how big matches work in August; they matter more than they should.
Dave thinks Arsenal can get something at Anfield. I think he’s dreaming. But then again, that’s what makes football brilliant. You never really know.
My Prediction
Liverpool vs Arsenal always delivers drama. This one won’t be different. Two teams with plenty to prove, early-season nerves, and everything to gain. Recipe for a proper match.
I’m backing Liverpool because it’s Anfield and they’re at home. But Arsenal won’t make it easy. They never do against Liverpool.
Sunday, August 31st, 4:30 pm. Can’t wait.
Henry’s still texting about tickets. Poor lad. Maybe I’ll watch it with him down the pub instead. Might be safer than having him at Anfield anyway.
