Quick Answer: House of the Dragon season 4 is due on HBO in 2028, though there’s no confirmed date yet. Cameras roll in spring 2027. It’s the final season and it’ll likely have eight episodes, and here in the UK you’ll probably catch it on Sky Atlantic, NOW and HBO Max.

When Will House of the Dragon Season 4 Be Released?
Short answer? In 2028. There’s no date yet, but the show has a habit. Season 1 arrived in August 2022, season 2 in June 2024 and season 3 on 21 June 2026. The first three seasons have arrived roughly two years apart.
Season 3 started shooting at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Watford on 21 March 2025, wrapped in October, and hit our tellies about 15 months after day one.
Forbes crunched the numbers. Filming between March and May 2027 points to a premiere between May and July 2028. Game of Thrones gave us ten episodes, most years. Now it’s two years for eight. If HBO sticks with the show’s summer pattern, June 2028 would be a reasonable guess, but that’s only an estimate.

House of the Dragon Season 4 Filming Update
Who spilt the beans? Olivia Cooke, aka Alicent Hightower. ScreenRant asked if she’d started getting ready for the final season, and she said:
“I haven’t. I haven’t. We start filming next spring, but I don’t really know. I’m sure it’ll take me ages. You know, I’m English. My emotions are far, far deep down. you know, a year later, I’ll finally feel the grief from that show ending.
Very relatable. Cooke plays the adult Alicent, while Emily Carey portrayed Alicent before the Season 1 time jump.
Before season 3 aired, showrunner Ryan Condal said his team was “actively writing” season 4, as Gold Derby reported. He called it “the end” and “the final act in a story we’ve been waiting to tell for many years.”
Drafts have now gone to HBO, though Matthew Needham (Larys Strong) told Polygon he hasn’t read a single script. Why the snail’s pace? Winter is coming, reckons it’s worth it. European shoots and dragon VFX take ages, and rushing means cuts. Nobody wants a budget Vhagar.
What Will the Final Season Be About?
Spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned. The finale threw the whole board in the air. Rhaenyra finds out Aegon II isn’t dead after all, and neither is his dragon, Sunfyre. She tells Daemon to crush the Hightowers at Tumbleton and vows to kill Aegon herself.
Tumbleton was carnage. Gwayne offered to free Corlys and split the realm. Daemon said no thanks. Ulf the White sent Silverwing after Ormund Hightower (who’s now dead), and Ulf betrays Rhaenyra during the Battle of Tumbleton, turning Silverwing against the Black army. Daeron disappears during the chaos, leaving his fate and Tessarion’s fate unresolved.
In King’s Landing, Mysaria warned Helaena that Aegon was alive. Helaena tried to run, fell from a window and was impaled on spikes. Poor Alicent is off on a mission and has no clue yet.
Rhaenyra’s crown is wobbling. She had the High Septon killed, Larys took off with the treasury, and most of the Goldcloaks have deserted her. Aegon agrees to work with Aemond but says he may forgive him after they reclaim the throne and defeat Rhaenyra. The final shot is just proper chilling. Rhaenyra stares at a tapestry of herself on the Iron Throne, drenched in blood.
Fans are betting on the battle above the God’s Eye, the storming of the Dragonpit, Daeron’s rise, Addam’s role and the fates of Daemon, Aegon and Rhaenyra. Book readers already know it ends badly, with few dragons left.
Condal told TV Insider season 4 will be even bigger than season 3, with new characters, dragons and locations. He told Business Insider the goal is to tie up as many threads as possible in the “eight chapters” left.

What Changes Could Season 4 Bring?
If you want a word-for-word Fire & Blood, you may be disappointed. The show has already binned characters like Maelor Targaryen, and George R.R. Martin is not a happy man. In January 2026, he told The Hollywood Reporter that his relationship with Condal was “abysmal”.
Who Will Return for House of the Dragon Season 4?
No cast list yet, but ELLE has rounded up the actors whose characters are still breathing: Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Matthew Needham, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin and Abubakar Salim.
Sadly, it’s probably goodbye to Fabien Frankel (Criston Cole), Harry Collett (Jace) and Phia Saban (Helaena), whose characters didn’t survive.
Will There Be a Season 5?
Nope. HBO renewed the show in November 2025, at the same time as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, as Grazia covered. And Condal told Entertainment Weekly: “I can’t speak for everybody else involved with the show… But yes, that is very much my plan.”
Back in 2022, Martin wrote that it would take “four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, from start to finish,” as Variety pointed out. Deadline reported in 2023 that moving a major battle to season 3 made four seasons more likely.
Where Can You Watch It in the UK?
In the US, it airs on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday nights. We got season 3 at 2am on Mondays via Sky Atlantic, NOW and HBO Max. Sky says Sky Atlantic will continue to air future seasons. No trailer yet. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is also set to arrive in 2027.
