Right, the wait’s over — the Premier League 2026/27 fixtures have dropped, and we’ve got a cracker of an opener.
Champions Arsenal kick off the season at home to newly promoted Coventry on Friday 21 August, 8 pm at the Emirates, live on Sky Sports.
New managers everywhere, a reshuffled calendar, and ten months of chaos to look forward to. Here’s the lot.
- Arsenal start their title defence against Frank Lampard’s Coventry on Friday, 21 August.
- Coventry returned to the top flight after a 25-year absence.
- Liverpool, Chelsea, City, Palace, and more all begin under brand-new bosses.
- The season runs right through to Sunday, 30 May 2027, with every final-day game at 4 pm.
- It all starts a week later than usual, thanks to the expanded World Cup.
Champions vs Champions to Get Us Going
Arteta’s Arsenal finally ended that 22-year title drought last season, so they are the ones everyone is looking to beat now. And what a welcome-back party for Coventry.
The Independent reminds us the Sky Blues haven’t been in the top flight since they went down in 2001 — and to make it harder, they’ve got Manchester City early too.
Their first home game, the first-ever top-flight match at the CBS Arena, is against Hull, exactly like last season’s opener.
Owner Doug King can’t wait. He told Sky Sports News:
“What can you say – I thought it’d be a big one. Away with the champions, what a way to start it – champions vs champions.”
It’s no picnic for the other promoted lot, either. Ipswich open at home to Sunderland, then run straight into Manchester United and Liverpool. Hull mark their return after a decade away by hosting United at 12:30 on Saturday over on TNT Sports.

New Gaffers, New Vibes
The campaign is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable seasons in ages, and it’s the dugouts that explain why. Pep Guardiola’s gone after ten years at City, with Enzo Maresca taking over. Xabi Alonso’s the new man at Chelsea, and Andoni Iraola has bagged the Liverpool job.
Alonso’s reign begins with a short Monday-night trip to Fulham. The Cottagers are hunting a new boss themselves after Marco Silva headed off to Benfica to replace Mourinho, with Alvaro Arbeloa heavily linked.
The Standard notes Alonso signed a four-year deal back in May to replace Liam Rosenior—though he’ll be missing the suspended Wesley Fofana, and with no European football, Chelsea will stay in London for their first six games.
The merry-go-round didn’t stop there. Pierre Sage — last season’s Ligue 1 Manager of the Year, who steered Lens to second and won the Coupe de France — takes over at Palace and opens away at Everton, then hosts City. Marco Rose starts at Bournemouth, away at the Etihad.
De Zerbi enters his first full Spurs season at Brentford, where Keith Andrews’ Bees (ninth last year, having turned over United, Liverpool and Villa) await. And Michael Carrick, handed the statistically hardest start, takes United to Hull before that Manchester derby on 12 September.
A Calendar With a Twist
Things look a bit different this term. The Premier League confirms the season kicks off a week later than normal — that’s 89 clear days after last season and 33 days on from the World Cup final on 19 July, all because of the new 48-team format.
You’re getting 33 weekends and five midweek rounds. Clubs get at least a 60-hour breather over Christmas, and Boxing Day’s busier than last year. Then it’s done on Sunday, 30 May 2027, with every game at 4pm.
The international breaks have shifted too: just two in the first half now, with the first stretched to three weeks from 19 September to 10 October. That makes those opening five rounds feel massive.

Don’t Forget Europe
Nine of the clubs are in Europe again. Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, City, and Manchester United are in the Champions League. Bournemouth and Sunderland reach the Europa League alongside Palace, who got there by lifting the Conference League.
Brighton drop into the Conference League – which is exactly why their opener against Villa is a Sunday lunchtime job.

Spare a Thought for the Fatigued World Cup Player
Here’s the bit nobody’s really talking about: the players are going to be running on fumes. With the World Cup final on 19 July, anyone who went deep into a 48-team tournament gets barely a month’s rest before pre-season, never mind a competitive game. That’s nowhere near enough to recharge.
So don’t be shocked if some of the big names look leggy in August or if a few pick up daft early injuries. The clubs with stacks of international stars — your City, Arsenal, and Liverpool — could feel it most. Squad depth and clever rotation might matter more in those opening rounds than anyone fancies right now.
